Vladamir Propp- Narrative Thoery Work

Narrative Theory woek- Vladamir Propp:

Vlamadir Propp was a soviet formalist scholar who analysed all the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify the simple narrative elements.

He broke up fairy tales into different sections and throughout these sections; he was able to define the tale into a series of sequences (within the Russian Fairytale). He narrows his theories of the characters within a narrative down to the following 8:

-Hero – Who is on a quest (search?)

-Villain – The opposing foe to the hero

-Donor – Character who provides a tool(s) to the hero character

-Dispatcher – Who starts the hero on his quest/way?

-False Hero – Character who tries to divert the hero from his quest

-Helper – self-explanatory, helps the hero

-Princess – who is the reward for the hero?

-Father – who rewards the hero for his efforts

Examples of his theory:

Disneys -Tangled':
-Hero- Flynn Rider

-Villian- Mother Gothel

-Donor- Maximus

-False hero- The two thieves

-Helper- All the ruthians/thugs in the Snuggly Duckling.

-Princess- Rapunzel (‘Blondie’)

-Father- The king and queen
